Zen Shiatsu

Zen shiatsu or ‘finger pressure’ is a unique form of bodywork from Japan, where continuous, gentle leaning pressure is applied to the body and face to treat health problems. Zen Shiatsu stimulates the natural healing ability of the body and promotes a long-lasting sense of calm and relaxation, leaving you feeling lighter, energized and more productive. Each treatment is individually tailored to respond to your needs

Zen shiatsu stimulates blood circulation to release stiffness in the muscles, like western styles of massage, but shiatsu goes further to balance the structure of the bones, joints, muscles and tendons in which the meridian lines and points area located, leading to the total relaxation of the nervous system. Your body will experience the delicious shock of feeling totally and profoundly relaxed.

The ‘Zen’ of Zen Shiatsu comes from placing two hands on the body at all times. The giver pays particular care to the quality of touch and the acceptance of touch and pressure by the receiver. That is why Zen Shiatsu is called ‘the spirit of touch’.

Zen Shiatsu is used to treat a wide variety of issues such as tiredness and exhaustion; back, shoulder and hip problems; migraines and headaches; nervous tension and stress; digestive problems; menstrual and menopausal symptoms; insomnia; recovery from surgery, injury and chemotherapy; curvatures of the spine (including those related to osteoporosis); asthmatic and respiratory problems, stiffness and general lack of well-being.

In a shiatsu treatment, the receiver lies on a futon and remains fully clothed.  At the end of the treatment the Zen Shiatsu therapist may give specific advice on diet and exercise as needed to sustain the changes made during the treatment.

Zen Shiatsu is accredited by the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia. For more information on costs, see the Treatment and Programmes page.
